Eryn is an art therapy student at the Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy. She has a passion for helping the perinatal community. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is currently working as a labour and delivery nurse (17+ years of experience). Working as a nurse assisting women through the birthing process gives her a unique perspective on helping with anxiety associated with labour and delivery, pre and post-birth trauma experiences, as well as helping with postpartum concerns, ie breastfeeding concerns, postpartum anxiety, postpartum blues, postpartum depression and the grief of an early, or late loss. As a self-taught artist she has used her art over the years to help her work through events in her life, including the birth of her four children. She loves working with lots of different types of media, from digital to painting (acrylic and watercolour), to drawing/colouring, (pencil, pencil crayon, crayon, marker), to collage making and constructing 3D models (found objects, paper and clay). She’s also an avid reader and writer, with two short stories published. She’s looking forward to helping mothers with self-care through the power of creating art. Using mindfulness techniques to aid in slowing down and living in the moment. Helping them with accepting what cannot be changed; and empowering them to find their strengths and abilities to move forward through their fears, anxieties and depression to see the little joys and successes in this short stage of life.

I believe expressive and creative arts are an integral part of our lives, and in my journey, I truly wish to integrate arts with psychology in my life and my practice. I have an Undergraduate Degree in Psychology and a Graduate Degree specializing in Clinical Psychology. After my Master’s, I pursued to become a certified REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) practitioner and have been practicing since. Also, I had the opportunity to learn from and intern under an Art Therapist for over six months, where I co-facilitated Art Therapy Support Groups under supervision. I am an amateur artist and a dancer with formal training in both. I started using arts as means of expression at a young age; however, it wasn’t until I went to art therapy for myself that I truly understood the meaning of healing through expressive and creative arts. Now, being a Ciiat Art Psychotherapy Diploma Student, I get to advocate and practice what I genuinely believe in. I am very passionate about promoting well-being, personal growth, self-expression, and self-exploration through arts. I want to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for everyone. I aim to provide the utmost help and support using various art forms and media.

I have been interested in art throughout my life and am passionate as well about cultures, faith, symbols, healing, and art. These interests have led to a sacred calling to work in all these areas, combining them with my art therapy practice and own personal art making.

Semaline was born in Lebanon and studied graphic design, art, and illustration. Most of her 15+ years have been spent with different Christian ministries in several countries, prison ministry, especially with adults, and orphanage ministry with children. And a mental disability center in Lebanon. Also, families who have experienced trauma.

She believes one primary means of change lies in developing a solid, therapeutic, and collaborative relationship with people.

Semaline also believes that ultimately, clients can come to know—when they feel safe, respected, and heard—what is best for themselves, which then assists people to realize they don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. However, we all need a compassionate mentor to help “sort out the messiness of life.” This is where she comes in: helping people feel safe, respected, and heard within a container of compassion.

Semaline loves reading, paintings, sculpture, music, and cooking. She also loves all forms of art. She relishes the fact that in every act of art making and in every the unseen thing and place there is this flash—this epiphany, this ah-ha! —where the physical meets the idea, the mundane meets the magic, and this becomes the precise moment when a genius is born—and perhaps breakthrough and healing. That is the special moment when imagination infused creation, resulting in healing art.
